Over 20 Years of Aquaculture-PV Innovation Across China

From inland water towns to coastal tidal flats, a new model of rural revitalization is taking shape. Through technological innovation and application-driven development, Suntech is advancing aquaculture-PV integration—bringing to life a sustainable model where power generation and fish farming coexist, and where energy transition aligns with rural growth.

Unlocking Dual Value

China’s extensive water resources, long used for aquaculture, are now emerging as key assets in the clean energy transition. The aquaculture-PV model enables dual use of water areas: solar arrays installed above generate clean electricity, while aquaculture continues below—creating combined economic and environmental value.

With over two decades of experience in photovoltaics, Suntech continues to drive innovation across diverse application scenarios. From high-efficiency modules to integrated system solutions and lifecycle services, the company supports large-scale deployment—advancing aquaculture-PV from parallel use to true synergy.

Deployment Across China

Suntech’s water-based solar projects are being deployed across China, activating underutilized water surfaces and demonstrating the value of integrated development.

In Qingyang County, Anhui Province, former mining subsidence areas have evolved into aquaculture zones. Suntech’s “PV + ecological aquaculture” project improves farming conditions through panel shading and temperature regulation, delivering both ecological restoration and economic returns.

Over 20 Years of Aquaculture-PV Innovation Across China

In Taishan, Guangdong Province, abundant tidal flats are being leveraged to support energy transition. Suntech’s 150MW aquaculture-PV project integrates efficient power generation with ecological aquaculture, maximizing water resource utilization and enabling coordinated industrial growth.

Engineered for Water Environments

Water environments present challenges such as high humidity, salt mist, and dynamic wind loads. Suntech’s modules are engineered for durability and stable performance in these conditions.

Powered by N-type TOPCon technology, the modules deliver low degradation and strong low irradiance performance. Combined with SMBB design and optimized cell processes, they reduce power loss while enhancing structural reliability.

With efficiency up to 24.8% and a bifacial rate of up to 85%, the modules effectively capture both direct and reflected light from the water surface. Advanced encapsulation enhances resistance to salt mist, UV exposure, and strong winds, while a low power temperature coefficient ensures stable performance in high-temperature environments—helping reduce system costs and deliver reliable long-term returns.

Suntech’s aquaculture-PV model demonstrates how technological innovation and scenario integration can unlock value across energy, economy, and ecology. Looking ahead, the company will continue to advance “PV+” applications through scalable solutions and continuous innovation—supporting the transition toward a cleaner, more efficient, and more sustainable energy system.
